The Court of Appeal in Abuja has rendered the March 18 governorship election in Zamfara State governorship election inconclusive.

In a unanimous ruling by a three-member panel of Justices, the court invalidated the victory of Governor Dauda Lawal from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the gubernatorial contest.

The court mandated the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to organize a fresh election in three Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state, where previous elections didn’t occur or where the results from various polling units were not properly accounted for.

Justice Sybil Nwaka, delivering the lead judgment, criticized INEC for relying on information from its IReV portal to compile the final results of the governorship election.

This decision stemmed from an appeal filed by the immediate past governor of the state, Bello Matawalle, who represented the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the election.
