Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), issued a stark warning to churches, cautioning against the neglect of politicians once they exit office.
Addressing congregants at St. Mark’s Anglican Church in Port Harcourt during the birthday celebration of House of Representatives Minority Leader Kingsley Ogundu Chinda, Wike underscored the troubling trend of politicians being sidelined by churches post-tenure.
Expressing dismay over the disparity between politicians’ contributions to churches during their time in office and the subsequent abandonment they face afterward, the FCT Minister urged clergy members to uphold the principles of compassion and support.
“The church should also remain steadfast; the church should also not abandon people when they’re no longer in office,” Wike emphasized, urging churches to maintain their spiritual duty of praying for the political class.
In a scathing indictment of the clergy, he challenged them to practice what they preach, admonishing them to offer unwavering support and prayers for politicians irrespective of their status.
“You, as agents of God, must show that you’re practicing what you preach. It’s not only politicians. Always be there for us; pray for us; don’t change,” he said.
