The Labour Party has dragged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to the Federal High Court in Abuja over the alleged exclusion of its candidate from the upcoming Enugu North Senatorial District by-election scheduled for June 20, 2026.
The party said it duly conducted its primary election and produced Ambassador Simon Ejike Eze as its candidate after notifying INEC in line with electoral guidelines. However, it alleged that the commission denied it access to upload the candidate’s details on its nomination portal despite repeated efforts to resolve the issue.
Labour Party argued that it met all legal requirements and described INEC’s justification for rejecting its nomination process as unacceptable. The party maintained that it should not be punished for any failure by electoral officials to monitor its primary election.
The suit follows the vacancy created by the death of former Senator Okey Ezea and seeks to compel INEC to recognize the party’s candidate for the by-election.
