A video showing female students reportedly walking blindfolded to sit for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in Ede-Oballa, Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State, has generated widespread reactions on social media.
According to reports, the action was linked to a local cultural practice that restricts women and girls from seeing a particular masquerade during its outing. As a result, affected females are required to be blindfolded whenever they need to move around during the period.
The students were said to have left their homes under the arrangement in order to write their examinations, while some women reportedly chose to remain indoors until the cultural activity ended.
The development has sparked discussions online about the intersection of cultural traditions, education and the rights of women and girls in society.
