Former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has renewed his call for the release of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, insisting that there is no justification for his continued detention.

Speaking during an interactive session with Nigerians in Washington, D.C., United States, Obi maintained that he has consistently opposed Kanu’s incarceration, arguing that expressing opinions or criticizing public officials should not be treated as a criminal offence.

The former presidential candidate noted that politicians are often subjected to criticism and name-calling, stressing that such actions alone should not warrant imprisonment.

Obi also advocated dialogue as a key strategy for addressing agitations and grievances across the country. According to him, meaningful engagement with agitating groups would enable government to better understand their concerns and work towards lasting solutions.

He stated that if given the opportunity to lead, he would prioritize consultations and peaceful engagement with various groups rather than confrontation.

The comments come amid ongoing debates over the detention of Kanu, whose case continues to generate reactions across Nigeria, particularly in the South-East region.

Obi’s latest remarks are expected to further fuel discussions on national unity, security, and the appropriate approach to handling separatist agitations and political dissent in the country.
