A major fire outbreak on Sunday evening 14 of June caused panic among residents and business owners after a fuel tanker caught fire at Aka God Filling Station in Nkwoegwu, Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State.
According to eyewitness accounts, the incident occurred while a tanker was offloading petroleum products at the filling station. Reports indicate that the driver attempted to avoid a motorcycle that obstructed his path, causing the tanker to scrape against a metal barricade within the station premises.
The contact reportedly generated sparks, which ignited the highly flammable environment and triggered a massive blaze that sent thick smoke billowing into the sky.
Residents and passersby fled the area as the fire rapidly spread, raising fears of a possible explosion and wider destruction.
Fortunately, firefighters from both the Abia State Fire Service and the Federal Fire Service responded swiftly to the emergency, arriving shortly after receiving distress calls. Their intervention helped contain the inferno and prevented what could have escalated into a major disaster.
As of the time of filing this report, no casualties had been officially confirmed, while authorities are expected to conduct further investigations to determine the exact cause of the incident and assess the extent of damages.
The incident has once again highlighted the need for strict adherence to safety protocols during the transportation and handling of petroleum products.
