Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command have arrested two suspects over alleged production and distribution of adulterated alcoholic beverages in the state.
The Command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the suspects were arrested by officers attached to the Rapid Response Squad/VCRU following credible intelligence.
The suspects, identified as Ikechukwu Okeke (42) and Chukwuemeka Okeke (38), were reportedly linked to a syndicate involved in counterfeiting popular alcoholic brands.
According to the police, the suspects confessed during interrogation and led operatives to their mini-factory where the illegal activities were carried out.
Items recovered from the facility include fake Seaman’s Schnapps, McDowell’s, Eagle Schnapps, Elliot Hot Drinks, Baileys, as well as chemicals used in production, empty bottles, labels, and packaging materials.
The police said the suspects are currently in custody while investigations continue to track other members of the syndicate and dismantle their network.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, commended the operatives and warned those involved in counterfeit consumable goods to desist or face prosecution.
