The Anambra State House of Assembly has called on Governor Chukwuma Soludo to ensure the swift prosecution of Mrs. Chisom Chukwuyere, the woman accused of severely abusing her 10-year-old house help, Chiziterem, in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area.

The lawmakers also urged security agencies to arrest the suspect’s husband, whom they described as an accomplice for allegedly failing to protect the child from the prolonged abuse.

The resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by the member representing Onitsha North I Constituency, Hon. Mimi Azikiwe, and supported by 27 other lawmakers.

While presenting the motion, Azikiwe cited provisions of the Anambra State Child Rights Law, 2006, which criminalises child abuse, neglect, exploitation, trafficking, and other forms of violence against children. She stressed the need for immediate legal action to ensure justice for victims and deter future offenders.

Lawmakers expressed concern over delays in the investigation and prosecution of child abuse cases, warning that such delays deepen victims’ trauma and encourage impunity.

The Assembly further urged the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare to work closely with relevant agencies to ensure prompt assessment, investigation, and prosecution of all reported cases of child abuse across the state.

Several lawmakers advocated for an open trial in the case, noting that the severity of the allegations could warrant charges including attempted murder, torture, and other related offences.

Speaker of the House, Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, who recently visited the victim in hospital alongside former Senator , also called for a review of the state’s Child Rights Law to address emerging realities and strengthen child protection measures.

The victim, whose condition drew public attention after a viral video surfaced online, is currently receiving medical treatment, while three suspects, including the child’s guardian, remain in police custody awaiting prosecution.

The Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to protecting children’s rights and ensuring that perpetrators of child abuse face the full weight of the law.
