The Managing Director of the Enugu State Investment Development Authority (ENSIDA), Dr. Kenechukwu Nnamani, has revealed that ongoing investment engagements between Enugu State and Chinese business interests are driving plans to establish direct cargo flight operations between China and the South-East through Enugu.

The development follows recent disclosures by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, that negotiations are underway to commence direct cargo flights from China to Enugu before the end of 2026.

Speaking with journalists, Nnamani said the proposed cargo route is a product of sustained investment promotion efforts by the Enugu State Government aimed at attracting foreign investment and strengthening trade infrastructure.

According to him, discussions are currently focused on creating a direct cargo connection between Guangzhou, China, and Enugu, a move expected to significantly improve supply chains and reduce logistics costs for traders across the South-East.

He explained that the initiative would enable merchants to consolidate goods in China and receive shipments directly in Enugu, with onward distribution to major commercial centres such as Onitsha and Aba.

Nnamani further disclosed that the Enugu State Government is positioning the Akanu Ibiam International Airport as a major cargo and logistics hub for the South-East, in line with Governor Peter Mbah’s vision of transforming the state into a leading destination for investment, commerce, and industrial growth.

If successfully implemented, the direct cargo flight route is expected to boost international trade, enhance regional economic activities, and strengthen the South-East’s connectivity to global markets.
