Imo State court has sentenced a woman, Joy Igwe, to life imprisonment for the severe abuse of her five-year-old stepdaughter, Onyinyechi.
The judgment followed months of legal proceedings arising from an incident that occurred on November 25, 2025, when the convict was accused of subjecting the child to inhumane treatment at their residence.

According to reports presented before the court, the young girl sustained serious injuries after her hands were immersed in hot water and she was repeatedly burned with candle wax. The case sparked widespread outrage and renewed calls for stronger protection of children against abuse and violence.
Delivering judgment, the court found the defendant guilty and sentenced her to life imprisonment, describing the offence as a grave violation of the rights and dignity of a child.
Child rights advocates and residents have welcomed the verdict, describing it as a strong warning against child abuse and a significant step toward justice for vulnerable children.
The case has also reignited discussions on the need for increased vigilance, early reporting of abuse cases, and stricter enforcement of child protection laws across the country.
Authorities have urged members of the public to promptly report suspected cases of child abuse to relevant agencies to prevent similar incidents and safeguard the welfare of children.
