The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Enugu Region, has intensified its sensitisation campaign in Ebonyi State, urging host communities to protect critical electricity infrastructure and avoid activities that endanger lives and power supply stability.
The outreach, held in Umuhuali, Ezillo, and Nkalagu communities, focused on rising cases of vandalism, illegal structures within transmission corridors, and unsafe activities around high-voltage installations.
Speaking during the engagement, the General Manager (Transmission), Enugu Region, Dr. Thomas Inugonum, warned against tampering with 330kV and 132kV transmission lines, stressing that such actions pose severe risks to human life and national power stability.
He also cautioned residents against building, farming, trading, or dumping waste within the Transmission Company’s Right of Way, as well as excavating soil around transmission tower foundations, which could compromise structural safety.
Dr. Inugonum noted that similar sensitisation programmes in other states had yielded positive results and expressed optimism that Ebonyi communities would cooperate in safeguarding power infrastructure.
He further recalled a fatal incident in Ezillo where a suspected vandal reportedly died while attempting to tamper with a transmission tower on the Nkalagu–Abakaliki 132kV line.
Community leaders, including the President General of Ezza Umuhuali Town Union, Solomon Nweke, acknowledged the role of vigilantes and residents in reporting suspicious activities, which has led to arrests in some cases.
TCN urged continued collaboration with host communities to protect national assets and ensure uninterrupted power supply across the region.
