The Danish government is considering a nationwide ban on the Islamic call to prayer, popularly known as the Adhan, in a move that is already stirring fierce debate across Europe.

Denmark’s Immigration Minister, Morten Bødskov, declared that the Islamic prayer call “has no place in Denmark” as authorities launched a fresh investigation into whether mosque broadcasts of the Adhan can be prohibited throughout the country.

The proposal marks the third attempt by Denmark’s ruling Social Democratic Party to push for such a restriction, following previous failed efforts in 2020 and 2025.

Government officials say the ongoing review will assess the balance between religious freedom and concerns over noise pollution and the use of public spaces. Although Denmark’s constitution guarantees freedom of worship, authorities note that certain limitations can still be imposed under specific legal conditions.

The development comes amid Denmark’s increasingly strict immigration and integration policies under Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s administration.

However, reports indicate that local municipalities have received only a handful of complaints regarding prayer calls, prompting critics to question the real motive behind the proposed ban.

The move is expected to ignite fresh controversy over religious rights, immigration policies and the growing visibility of Muslim communities in Denmark.
