Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has filed an N8 billion defamation suit against actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo at the High Court of Anambra State, Onitsha Judicial Division.

The suit follows comments allegedly made by Okonkwo during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on June 8, 2026, which were later shared across YouTube and social media platforms.

Obi, through his legal counsel, Chief Alex Ejesieme (SAN), argues that the statements were false, malicious, and damaging to his reputation, integrity, political standing, and public image.

The former Anambra State governor is seeking N5 billion in general damages, N2 billion in aggravated damages, and N1 billion in exemplary damages. He is also asking the court to compel Okonkwo to publicly retract the statements and issue an apology on national media platforms, as well as remove all related publications from his social media accounts.

The court has directed Kenneth Okonkwo to enter an appearance within 42 days of being served the court documents or risk judgment being entered in his absence.

The case marks a new chapter in the public fallout between the two former political allies, who have recently exchanged criticisms over opposition politics and leadership.
