The Federal Government has launched a major fertiliser distribution programme to support over 20,000 smallholder farmers across the South-East as part of efforts to increase food production and strengthen national food security.

Under the initiative coordinated by the National Agricultural Development Fund (NADF), 80,640 bags of fertiliser will be distributed to 20,160 farmers in Anambra, Enugu, Ebonyi and Imo states ahead of the 2026 wet farming season.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony in Owerri, NADF Executive Secretary, Mohammed Ibrahim, represented by Ernest Ihedigbo, said the intervention is designed to improve farmers’ productivity, bridge critical input gaps and support indigenous fertiliser manufacturers.

Representing the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, Special Adviser Ibrahim Tanimu described the programme as a strategic investment aimed at reducing food production costs, increasing crop yields and advancing Nigeria’s food self-sufficiency goals.

The National President of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria, Mohammed Magaji, commended the initiative, noting that timely access to quality fertiliser would boost agricultural productivity, lower production costs and improve farmers’ incomes.

The fertiliser intervention forms part of the Federal Government’s broader strategy to strengthen agricultural value chains, create rural jobs and reduce food inflation across the country.
