The National Association of Persons with Physical Disabilities (NAPWPD), Abia State Chapter, has appealed to the management of the Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal in Umuahia to employ qualified persons with disabilities across its various operational departments.

The appeal was made during a courtesy visit by the association’s leadership to the management of the state-owned transport facility.

Speaking during the visit, the Chairman of NAPWPD in Abia, Mr. Iroabuchi Alozie, commended the state government for establishing the Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal and introducing the Abia Green Shuttle Buses, describing the initiative as a symbol of the state’s renewed commitment to development, efficiency and orderly public transportation under Governor Alex Otti’s administration.

Mr. Alozie said many members of the association possess the educational qualifications, professional competence and experience required to serve in various positions, including ticketing, customer service, administration, ICT, clerical duties and route management.

He noted that the appeal was based on the provisions of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018, and the Abia State Disability Law, both of which guarantee equal employment opportunities and prohibit discrimination against persons with disabilities.

The association also raised concerns over the alleged harassment of one of its members by a Green Shuttle Bus driver at Bata Junction in Aba, urging transport operators and members of the public to respect the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities.

Responding, the General Manager of the Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal, Mr. Ifeanyi Chima, apologised over the reported incident and assured the association that a thorough investigation would be carried out, with appropriate disciplinary action to be taken if any staff member is found culpable.

Mr. Chima also disclosed that the terminal has dedicated facilities for persons with disabilities, senior citizens, pregnant women and nursing mothers, including a designated waiting area and priority boarding arrangements for passengers with special needs.

He reaffirmed the terminal’s commitment to providing inclusive and accessible transport services for all residents of Abia State.
