Residents of Imo State’s Orlu Senatorial Zone have called on their elected representatives to improve constituency engagement, accountability and overall legislative performance.

The demand was made by the Orluzurume Youths Assembly during the presentation of a 72-page Legislative Performance Assessment Committee (LPAC) report evaluating the performance of 17 lawmakers representing the zone at both the state and national levels.

The report assessed 12 members of the Imo State House of Assembly, four members of the House of Representatives and the Senator representing Orlu Zone.

Speaking at the presentation, President of the Orluzurume Youths Assembly, Prince Izunna Obiefule, expressed concern that many lawmakers have failed to maintain regular engagement with their constituents or seek their input on issues affecting the zone.

He explained that the report was compiled from consultations and interactions with residents across the 12 local government areas that make up the Orlu Senatorial District.

According to him, the assessment was not intended to ridicule or attack any lawmaker but to promote democratic accountability, transparency and improved service delivery.

Obiefule said key concerns raised by constituents included inadequate constituency engagement, limited public accountability, poor communication of legislative activities and insufficient empowerment programmes.

He described the report as a civic initiative aimed at strengthening democratic governance by encouraging elected representatives to remain responsive to the needs and aspirations of the people.

Also speaking, Chairman of the Legislative Performance Assessment Committee, Mr. Nnamdi Achi, said members of the committee visited communities and villages across the Orlu Senatorial Zone to gather firsthand information used in preparing the report.

He noted that the assessment was conducted using carefully developed performance indicators to provide an objective evaluation of the lawmakers’ representation and contributions to their constituencies.
