The widow of a late police inspector, Dr. Paul Ikechukwu Obodo, has appealed to the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, to order a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding her husband’s death and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
Speaking in a telephone interview, Mrs. Ngozi Isiwu-Obodo said her husband, who held a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree and served in the Operations Department of the Enugu State Police Command, died after he was allegedly knocked down by a convoy while on his way to work on July 5.
According to her, eyewitnesses claimed the convoy failed to stop after the incident, allegedly dragging the officer’s body and his service rifle for some distance before speeding away.
Mrs. Obodo expressed concern over what she described as the lack of communication and condolence from the Enugu State Police Command since the incident, urging the Inspector-General of Police to personally intervene and ensure a transparent investigation.
She described her late husband as a dedicated and committed officer whose death deserves a full and impartial probe.
Meanwhile, the Enugu State Police Command has confirmed the inspector’s death but dismissed social media reports alleging that a police convoy was responsible for the fatal accident.
In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, said there is currently no evidence linking any police convoy to the hit-and-run incident.
He assured the public that the command has commenced a comprehensive investigation to establish the actual circumstances surrounding the officer’s death, adding that further information would be made available as investigations progress.
The police described the incident as tragic and reiterated their commitment to conducting a thorough, transparent and professional investigation.
