A three-storey building under construction has collapsed in the Umuozue area of Osisioma Ngwa Local Government Area of Abia State, with the contractor reportedly going into hiding following the incident.
The building, located at No. 7 Chima Otuka Street, collapsed at about 3:00 a.m. on Thursday, several hours after workers had left the construction site on Wednesday evening.
The collapse also damaged a vehicle and other property belonging to a tenant in an adjoining building.
Although no official cause of the collapse has been established, some residents of the community said workers had completed parapet works on the building on Wednesday evening, shortly before the incident.
Following the collapse, officials of the Osisioma Ngwa Town Planning Office moved to secure the site and subsequently sealed the building to facilitate a thorough investigation.
The contractor handling the project is reportedly yet to be located.
Authorities are expected to investigate the structural integrity of the building and determine the circumstances that led to its collapse.
