The Imo State Government has commenced technical collaboration with medical experts from Integromed Germany to strengthen hospital operations and improve healthcare delivery across the state.
The German delegation, led by the Managing Director of Integromed Germany, Dr. Soliman Ibrahim, held technical engagements with the Heartland Hospitals Management Corporation, HHMC, in Owerri.
The delegation was received by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of HHMC, Dr. Emmanuel Ogueri, alongside members of the corporation’s management team.
Discussions focused on specialised healthcare training, medical equipment management and maintenance, fire safety, infection prevention and control, emergency care and improving hospital processes.
The German experts and HHMC management later joined Governor Hope Uzodimma at the Heartland Specialist Hospital, Owerri, where they inspected ongoing works at the facility.
The engagement followed a meeting between the German delegation and Governor Uzodimma, where both sides explored international expertise, knowledge transfer and capacity building as part of efforts to improve healthcare services in Imo.
Under the proposed partnership, German experts are expected to train doctors, nurses, other healthcare professionals and clinical trainers.
An initial pilot programme is expected to cover five hospitals, with technical support focusing on hospital efficiency, patient flow, emergency care, clinical services and equipment management.
Speaking during the engagement, Governor Uzodimma stressed the importance of professional hospital management to ensure that investments in healthcare infrastructure translate into effective medical services.
The governor also expressed his administration’s ambition to develop local capacity for the production of medical equipment in Imo State.
“Our hope, at the end of the day, is to begin to even manufacture medical equipment in Imo State,” Uzodimma said.
The HHMC Managing Director, Dr. Emmanuel Ogueri, pledged the corporation’s cooperation with the German experts, saying the partnership would strengthen the management of healthcare facilities and improve the utilisation of hospital infrastructure.
He said technical expertise and capacity building would be critical to improving patient care and ensuring that investments in healthcare facilities produce better outcomes.
The collaboration forms part of the state government’s broader healthcare development programme, which includes the construction and reconstruction of general hospitals, expansion of primary healthcare facilities and efforts to strengthen health insurance and pharmaceutical supply.
HHMC said the partnership is expected to improve local technical expertise, strengthen equipment management and address operational gaps across participating hospitals.
The state government is also seeking to expand specialised medical services, with the broader objective of improving access to quality healthcare and reducing the need for residents to travel outside Imo for certain medical treatments.
