More than 6,000 members of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, have reportedly defected to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Enugu State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The defectors, led by Mr. Godwin Obasi, were received by the PDP leadership in Enugu on Saturday, September 19, 2026. Reports said the group claimed to have members drawn from the 260 electoral wards and 17 Local Government Areas of the state.
Speaking on the decision, Obasi said the group left the NDC because of what he described as the party’s choice of unpopular candidates for various elective positions.
He said the members had collectively decided to join the PDP and participate in the party’s activities ahead of the 2027 elections.
Receiving the defectors, the PDP governorship candidate in Enugu State, Chief Uche Nnaji, assured them of accommodation within the party.
Nnaji also criticised the current administration in the state, alleging that it had failed to fulfil several of its promises to residents. He particularly questioned the state’s revenue generation and made claims concerning the payment of pensions and gratuities.
The PDP candidate further alleged that the state government’s internally generated revenue had placed significant pressure on residents, while questioning the benefits residents had received in return.
The claims made by Nnaji were part of his remarks at the event and represent the position of the opposition party.
Also speaking, PDP chieftain Chief Basil Ani described the reported movement of more than 6,000 NDC members into the PDP as a boost to the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
The development comes as political parties and aspirants continue to mobilise supporters and strengthen their structures ahead of the 2027 general elections.
