Schoolgirls in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State have benefited from the distribution of sanitary pads under the Renewed Hope Initiative’s Flow With Confidence programme, championed by Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
The outreach, organised as part of activities marking the International Day of the Girl Child, aims to promote menstrual hygiene, protect the dignity of adolescent girls and reduce barriers to education associated with inadequate access to menstrual hygiene products.
In Edo State, the initiative is supported by the wife of the governor, Mrs Edesili Okpebholo, as part of efforts to advance the welfare, education and empowerment of women and girls.
At the local government level, the distribution exercise was led by Mrs Sandra Eriamiantoe, wife of the Executive Chairman of Ovia North-East Local Government Council, Hon. Orobosa Christopher Eriamiantoe.
The delegation visited six schools: Igue-Daiken Grammar School, Nfor Secondary School, Ezomo Secondary School, Eresoyen Primary School in Oluku, Army Day Secondary School in Isiohor, and Oghede Secondary School in Oghede, where sanitary pads were distributed to schoolgirls.
Other officials who participated in the outreach included the Ovia North-East Local Government Woman Leader, Mrs Sonata Eweka; Director of Social Services, Mrs Osahon Jane; and WDP Secretary, Iduoze Dora.
The Flow With Confidence initiative seeks to address period poverty by improving access to essential menstrual hygiene products and encouraging girls to remain confident and participate fully in their education during menstruation.
The programme also reflects the role of community based interventions in supporting adolescent health, promoting school attendance and creating a more supportive environment for girls.
Through the Renewed Hope Initiative at the national level, with support from the Edo State government’s First Lady and local implementation in Ovia North-East, the programme seeks to extend menstrual health support to girls across communities.
