The Security Situation Room (SSR) has commended the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for what it described as a commendable record of institutional integrity, accountability and professionalism in the discharge of its responsibilities.

The commendation was contained in a statement issued in Abuja by the Convener of the Security Situation Room, Douglas Ogbankwa, Esq., who described the EFCC’s operational approach as an example of the Nigerian dream and a model other law enforcement agencies should emulate.

According to the statement, the EFCC has distinguished itself by providing accessible channels for receiving complaints and investigating cases without demanding or collecting money from citizens under the guise of mobilisation.

The organisation also acknowledged the Commission’s efforts in uncovering financial crimes, rescuing victims of fraud and ensuring that recovered proceeds are returned to their rightful owners without officers demanding percentages or gratification.

The SSR noted that the EFCC’s approach to financial recovery and restitution reflects the principle that law enforcement is a public responsibility and should not be treated as a business venture.

The statement further commended the conduct of EFCC personnel, describing their handling of cases as generally civil and professional. It also praised the Commission’s working environment and administrative facilities, noting that a functional and secure institutional setting helps protect sensitive information.

However, the Security Situation Room acknowledged concerns over certain operational practices, particularly aggressive night raids and instances of prolonged detention without court orders. It maintained that these concerns should be addressed even as the Commission’s positive practices are recognised.

The group also raised concerns about the alleged leakage of intelligence and investigation reports within some security agencies, attributing such breaches in part to the handling of classified documents in public business centres, where sensitive government information may be exposed to unauthorised persons.

It urged other security agencies to adopt stronger standards of professionalism, confidentiality, accountability and respect for citizens’ rights, using the EFCC’s positive operational practices as a reference point.

The SSR stressed that building a better Nigeria requires public institutions and individuals to uphold integrity and take responsibility for their actions, adding that small acts of accountability can contribute meaningfully to national development.
