Patients at the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, Ogun state, staged a protest on Wednesday against alleged poor treatment, attacking and biting a doctor in the process.
The unexpected protest, which lasted over two hours, saw nurses and other doctors fleeing as the situation escalated. Police operatives from the Lafenwa Divisional Headquarters eventually intervened to restore order.
A source familiar with the incident told The Punch that, “The patients were protesting poor feeding, poor sanitary conditions, general insensitivity from the management, and the lack of an alternative power source during outages.”
A female relative of one patient, who requested anonymity, revealed that the affected patients pay between N500,000 and N700,000 depending on their stay duration.
When asked for a comment, the hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Bola Ajibola, redirected inquiries to the management.
Lafenwa Divisional Police Officer Enatufe Omoh confirmed the incident, stating that the protest stemmed from patients’ grievances over denied privileges, such as restricted visitation and limited freedom of movement.
