Burkina Faso’s junta leader, Ibrahim Traore, will remain in power for another five years following a national dialogue agreement to extend military rule.
The announcement was made by Colonel Moussa Diallo, chairman of Burkina Faso’s national dialogue, on state television on Saturday, according to Peoples Gazette.
“The duration of the transition is fixed at 60 months from 2 July 2024,” Mr. Diallo stated.
Mr. Traore, 36, signed the agreement, which allows him to contest the election after the five-year period.
The military initially took power in Burkina Faso in January 2022 under the leadership of Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba.
Traore assumed the presidency in a coup that ousted Damiba in September 2022.
With this extension, Mr. Traore will serve as military ruler for seven years in total and could potentially remain in office if he wins the subsequent election.
