Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have surrounded the office of the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) in Abuja, just hours after the arrest of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Joe Ajaero.

While details surrounding the DSS operation at SERAP’s office remain unclear, the legal and advocacy organization shared a post via X (formerly Twitter), stating that the operatives were seeking to meet with its directors.

The post read, “Officers from Nigeria’s State Security Service (SSS) are presently unlawfully occupying SERAP’s office in Abuja, asking to see our directors. President Tinubu must immediately direct the SSS to end the harassment, intimidation, and attack on the rights of Nigerians.”

This incident follows SERAP’s recent open letter to President Tinubu, in which the organization gave the government 48 hours to reverse the recent hike in the pump price of premium motor spirit (PMS).

The letter urged the President to instruct the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to reverse what it described as an “illegal and unconstitutional” increase in petrol prices.

“The increase in petrol price constitutes a fundamental breach of constitutional guarantees and the country’s international human rights obligations,” the letter, signed by SERAP Deputy Director Kolawole Oluwadare, stated.
