Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, has passed away in London, according to an announcement made by his former aide, Bashir Ahmad.
Ahmad broke the news on Sunday via a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, revealing that Buhari died in a London clinic earlier in the day.
“The family of the former president has announced the passing of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London.
“ May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus. Amin,” Ahmad wrote.
Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, previously led the country as a military ruler from 1983 to 1985. Widely known for his anti-corruption drive and efforts to reform the economy, his leadership style earned both admiration and criticism throughout his political career.
Born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, into a Fulani family, Buhari was the 23rd child of his father. His rise to power as both military and civilian president marked him as one of the few Nigerians to hold the nation’s top office twice under different regimes.
Further details regarding funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family, in line with Islamic burial rites.
