U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy cautioned that a continued government shutdown could lead to widespread chaos in the nation’s air travel system.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned that if the ongoing federal government shutdown extends into next week, the effects on aviation could be severe. Speaking at a press briefing, Duffy said air traffic operations are already strained by staffing shortages, and the situation could escalate rapidly if funding is not restored.
“If this shutdown continues into next week, you will see mass flight delays, you’ll see mass cancellations, and you may see us close certain parts of the airspace, because we just cannot manage it without enough air traffic controllers,” he said.
Industry experts echoed the concern, noting that the aviation system relies heavily on a full workforce of controllers and support staff to maintain safety and efficiency. Airlines are preparing contingency plans, but Duffy urged Congress to act swiftly to end the shutdown and avoid jeopardizing the nation’s transportation system.
