An Anambra State High Court has granted bail to Nnewi-based native doctor, Ikechukwu JohnPaul Ezenagu, popularly known as “Mmuo Mmili Afuluanya,” who is standing trial over alleged violations of the Anambra Homeland Security Law.
Delivering the ruling, Justice Jude Obiora admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N50 million with one surety. The court also ordered him to deposit the title documents of his residential property, which could be forfeited if he fails to appear for trial or breaches any of the bail conditions.
In addition, the court barred the defendant from granting media interviews or making public comments concerning the case while proceedings are ongoing.
Reacting to the ruling, defence counsel, Barr. Kingsley Awuka, welcomed the decision, describing the bail conditions as fair and achievable.
Ezenagu was arrested on March 12 during a security operation by the Anambra State Government targeting individuals suspected of aiding criminal activities through alleged spiritual fortification and other unlawful practices.
The prosecution, led by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barr. Tobechukwu Nweke, is pursuing charges under the Anambra Homeland Security Law, which forms part of the state’s efforts to combat kidnapping, cultism, armed robbery, and related crimes.
The matter has been adjourned to July 3 for continuation of hearing.
