The Anambra State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting widows and vulnerable women, warning that individuals or groups involved in widow abuse, harassment, or unlawful property seizure will face sanctions.
The warning was issued by the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Mrs. Esther Chinyere Onyekesi, during a visit to Mrs. Nneka Azubuike Udokwu of Obosi, who is receiving medical treatment following an alleged assault linked to a family inheritance dispute.
Condemning the growing incidence of widow maltreatment, the Commissioner stated that the Soludo administration would not tolerate any form of intimidation, violence, or deprivation of the rights of widows across the state.
Mrs. Onyekesi disclosed that the government has intervened in the matter and called on traditional authorities and community leaders in Obosi to ensure a thorough investigation and justice for the victim.
According to reports, Mrs. Udokwu allegedly suffered physical assault and years of harassment following the death of her husband, amid claims of attempts to dispossess her of her matrimonial home and family property.
The widow appealed to the government, security agencies, and relevant stakeholders for protection and justice, alleging sustained intimidation and threats to her safety.
The incident has renewed concerns over widow abuse and inheritance-related disputes in some communities, prompting calls for stronger enforcement of laws safeguarding the rights and dignity of women and widows in Anambra State.
