The Anambra State House of Assembly has summoned key government officials to address the growing flood crisis across the state amid increasing concerns over its devastating impact on lives, property and infrastructure.
The resolution was reached during plenary in Awka following a motion of urgent public importance moved by the Minority Leader and member representing Nnewi South Constituency II, Johnbosco Akaegbobi.
The Assembly invited the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Felix Odimegwu Aguiyi, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Chike Maduekwe Ojukwu, and the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Ifeanyi Okey Ezeobi, to appear before lawmakers and outline measures being taken to prevent and manage flooding.
Lawmakers expressed concern over recurring flood disasters in major urban centres including Onitsha, Nnewi and Awka, blaming blocked drainage systems, poor waste disposal practices and inadequate stormwater management for the situation.
They cited recent incidents, including viral videos showing floodwaters sweeping away vehicles and reports of fatalities linked to flooding, as evidence of the urgent need for intervention.
The Assembly called for improved drainage infrastructure, proper channelisation of floodwaters, increased public sensitisation on environmental sanitation and the construction of catchment systems in residential areas.
Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, said the legislature remains committed to protecting the interests of Anambra residents and expressed confidence that the engagement with relevant ministries would help address the state’s flooding challenges.
The lawmakers maintained that safeguarding lives and property remains a fundamental responsibility of government and urged swift action to avert further disasters as the rainy season intensifies.
