The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State has dismissed reports claiming that over 7,000 of its members defected to the Labour Party (LP), describing the figures as exaggerated and misleading.
The reaction follows claims by former APC National Executive Committee member, Nduka Anyanwu, that thousands of his supporters joined him in defecting to the Labour Party during a meeting with the party’s state leadership in Umuahia.
In a statement, APC spokesperson Uche Aguoru said Anyanwu’s exit would not affect the party’s strength or its preparations for future elections. He argued that the former party chieftain had long distanced himself from APC activities and questioned the credibility of the reported number of defectors.
The party also accused Anyanwu of previously acting against APC’s interests during past elections, insisting that his departure would not weaken its political structure.
The Abia APC reaffirmed its commitment to rebuilding its support base and urged members to remain focused on the party’s goals ahead of future electoral contests.
