The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has commenced the installation of a 1.7-megawatt-hour (MWh) mini-grid solar power project at the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, in Anambra State, in a move aimed at improving electricity supply for academic and administrative activities.
The project officially commenced during a site handover ceremony attended by officials of TETFund, the management of the institution, and representatives of the contracting firm, Trade and Tech International Limited.
Leading the TETFund delegation, the Director of Information and Communications Technology, Engr. Joseph Odo, said the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, was selected as one of the beneficiary institutions under the TETFund Mini-Grid Solar Power Initiative, a programme designed to strengthen energy reliability in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
According to him, the project is expected to be completed within six months and will provide sustainable and cost-effective electricity to critical facilities, including administrative offices, ICT centres, laboratories and other essential units of the institution.
He explained that while the mini-grid is not intended to power the entire campus, it will guarantee uninterrupted electricity for strategic operations, reduce energy costs and improve overall efficiency.
The Team Leader of Trade and Tech International Limited, Engr. Mohammed Jibril, assured the institution that the project would be executed according to approved specifications and completed within the stipulated timeframe.
In her remarks, the Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Dr. Chioma Irene Awuzie, commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and TETFund for their continued investment in educational infrastructure across the country.
She assured the TETFund team and the contractors of the institution’s full cooperation to ensure the successful and timely completion of the project.
The event was attended by members of the Polytechnic Management, principal officers of the institution, officials of TETFund and representatives of the contracting firm.
