The Headquarters 6 Division of the Nigerian Army has urged its officers and soldiers to use social media responsibly, warning that careless online activities could undermine military operations and national security.

The charge was given by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6 Division Nigerian Army and Land Component Commander, Joint Task Force (South-South), Operation DELTA SAFE, Major General Emmanuel Emekah, during the opening of the Third Quarter Social Media Awareness Lecture for 2026 at the Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya Badminton Court, Port Harcourt Barracks, Rivers State.

Major General Emekah said the lecture was designed to familiarise personnel with the Armed Forces of Nigeria Social Media Policy 2018, highlighting common violations and the consequences of failing to comply with the guidelines.

He noted that despite the existence of the policy, some personnel still misuse social media, creating security vulnerabilities that could expose sensitive military information and jeopardise operations.

The GOC said the programme seeks to promote responsible online behaviour, improve awareness of cybersecurity, and ensure that officers and soldiers protect confidential information while preserving the image of the Nigerian Army.

He commended the Commander, Nigerian Army Cyber Warfare Command, Major General Emmanuel Mustafa, for facilitating the awareness lecture and expressed confidence that it would enhance personnel’s understanding of digital security and responsible social media engagement.

Meanwhile, Headquarters 6 Division Garrison also hosted 126 cadets of the 75 Regular Course (Naval Wing) of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) on an operational study tour.

The Senior Instructor of the NDA Naval Wing, Commander Clement Theophilus, said the visit was part of the Academy’s training programme aimed at exposing cadets to operational realities and strengthening their understanding of joint military operations, particularly collaboration between the Nigerian Army and the Nigerian Navy in tackling maritime crime.

Addressing the cadets, the Commander, 6 Division Garrison and Sector 3, Joint Task Force (South-South), Operation DELTA SAFE, Brigadier General Abubakar Adamu Bello, highlighted the importance of inter-service cooperation in protecting critical national infrastructure and securing Nigeria’s maritime domain.

He also encouraged the cadets to uphold discipline, integrity, loyalty, courage and selfless service, describing these values as essential for effective leadership and a successful military career.

The study tour featured presentations on the operational activities of Headquarters 6 Division Garrison, lectures, interactive sessions, exchange of souvenirs and a group photograph.
