The Imo State Government has pledged its support and cooperation to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, in the fight against money laundering and other financial crimes.
The Secretary to the Imo State Government, Chief Cosmas Iwu, made the commitment in Owerri while receiving a delegation of EFCC officials ahead of the 2026 Non-Profit Organisation, NPO, Risk Assessment Field Exercise against money laundering.
The EFCC delegation, led by Mrs. Korede Abdul-Aziz, visited the SSG at the Cabinet Office before the main session of the exercise at the Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu International Convention Centre, Owerri.
Iwu said the Imo State Government was ready to support federal agencies in carrying out their statutory responsibilities, describing crime as a global challenge that could spread rapidly.
He commended the EFCC for its continued efforts against financial crimes and expressed support for the Commission’s assessment of the non-profit sector.
According to him, the exercise is important in preventing Non-Profit Organisations from being used as channels for money laundering and terrorism financing.
The SSG said the state government places emphasis on transparency and accountability as essential elements of good governance, assuring that Imo would continue to support initiatives aimed at protecting citizens and public institutions.
Iwu also highlighted the state government’s anti-corruption efforts, alleging that payroll fraud under previous administrations resulted in monthly losses of more than 500 million naira.
He said the Uzodimma administration halted the alleged payroll irregularities and maintained that workers in the state are currently not owed salary arrears.
The EFCC’s 2026 NPO Risk Assessment Field Exercise is aimed at identifying and addressing vulnerabilities within the non-profit sector to money laundering and terrorism financing.
