On Tuesday evening, panic ensued among residents of Ibadan, the capital city of Oyo State, as tremors resembling an earthquake shook various parts of the city, sending people running for cover.
The unsettling incident occurred minutes before 8 pm, with reports indicating that the School of Nursing, University College Hospital, bore the brunt of the quake, allegedly shattering windows throughout the facility.
Communities such as Ologuneru, Owalla, Isokan, Ekerin, Eleyele, and sections of Apete reported feeling the tremors.
At Ologuneru, gates and fences shook but thankfully did not collapse.
Mr. Babatunde Arowosafe recounted, “My daughter and wife, who were in different places at the time of the shaking, ran out, saying they felt a heavy thud on the ground.
My daughter heard it at the back of the house, while her mother said she heard it on the roof.”
Sitting in the living room, Arowosafe initially thought something hit his gate, but the ground shaking made him reconsider.
Witnesses from various neighborhoods, including Bodija, Obasa, Mokola, Oke Itunu, Barracks, and Gbaremu, shared their experiences of the alarming event.
“I was alighting from a car when I heard a deafening noise. People ran helter-skelter. I felt things were rolling,” one resident reported.
Even within the University College Hospital, the impact was significant.
Leye, a nurse at UCH, shared on her status that some patients became confused and started running in response to the unexpected tremors.
The situation has left residents on edge, with authorities yet to provide comprehensive information about the incident.
