In a bizarre turn of events, a pigeon, once under suspicion of being a Chinese spy, has been released after spending a whopping eight months in Indian police custody.
The avian detainee, captured at a port in Mumbai, was accused of bearing “messages written in a Chinese-like script” on its wings, leading to an unconventional investigation.
Facing serious charges of espionage, the pigeon underwent an extensive eight-month inquiry by authorities, prompting concerns from the Indian branch of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) about the astonishingly prolonged detention.
Fortunately, the investigation yielded no evidence of wrongdoing, ultimately clearing the pigeon’s name.
The bird, now enjoying freedom and reportedly in good health, was released from its hospital confinement on Wednesday.
This peculiar incident adds to a series of espionage concerns involving pigeons in India.
In 2016, another pigeon carrying a threatening message to Prime Minister Modi was detained near the Pakistan border, while in 2010, a pigeon was held under armed guard for allegedly carrying out a “special mission of spying” due to suspicious markings and a mysterious ring.
