The Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, has issued a directive compelling the federal government to set fixed prices for essential goods and petroleum products within seven days.
As reported by Vanguard, Justice Ambose Lewis-Allagoa granted the order following an originating motion filed and argued by human rights activist Femi Falana SAN.
In his ruling, Justice Lewis-Allagoa emphasized the lack of opposition from the respondents, including the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Price Control Board, stating that all facts presented by Falana’s affidavit were deemed admitted.
The court ordered the Nigerian government to establish fixed prices for items such as Milk, Flour, Salt, Sugar, Bicycles and spare parts, Matches, Motorcycles and spare parts, Motor vehicles and spare parts, and Petroleum products including diesel, petrol motor spirit (PMS), and kerosene.
Falana (SAN) had approached the court seeking declarations and orders related to the government’s obligation under the Price Control Act to fix prices for various goods.
The court’s directives include compelling the government to fulfill its legal duty to fix prices within the stipulated seven-day period following the judgment’s delivery.
This ruling underscores the urgency of addressing the pricing disparities in essential goods and petroleum products, signaling a significant development in ensuring fair market practices and consumer protection.
