A United States-based Nigerian physician, Dr. Uzoma Nwaubani, has died in Abia State after suffering a sudden medical emergency while participating in a free medical outreach programme.

The outreach, a five-day health mission held from April 13 to April 17, 2026, was organised by the Abia State Government in partnership with the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas (ANPA).

Dr. Nwaubani, an ANPA member, had travelled to Nigeria with her husband and daughter—who is a final-year medical student in the United States—to offer free healthcare services to residents.

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, disclosed that the physician developed a sudden medical emergency during the exercise and was immediately rushed to a hospital for urgent care. A joint team of ANPA professionals and local medical experts made intensive efforts to stabilise her.

“Despite the gallant efforts of the highly skilled medical team to resuscitate her, she could not make it,” Otti said.

The governor expressed deep sorrow over her passing, describing her as a compassionate and committed professional who dedicated her time to serving others.

He extended condolences to her family, colleagues, and loved ones, adding that the state government is already in contact with them and will provide necessary support during this difficult period.

Otti also commended Dr. Nwaubani’s family and ANPA for allowing the outreach programme to continue despite the tragic loss, noting that her sacrifice reflects a profound commitment to humanity.
