The House of Representatives has approved the long-debated bill seeking the establishment of state police across Nigeria, nearing to reality a major step in ongoing security and constitutional reform discussions.
The decision was reached during Thursday’s plenary session presided over by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, following a formal vote by lawmakers.
According to the Speaker, the bill received overwhelming support, with 288 members voting in favour while only four lawmakers opposed it.
“The House said 288 lawmakers voted in support of the bill while four were against it,” Abbas confirmed during the session.
The passage of the bill comes after extensive debate among lawmakers, who dedicated part of the legislative day to deliberations on the proposed security restructuring framework.
The development is widely seen as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to decentralise policing and strengthen internal security architecture.
Further legislative steps are expected as the bill progresses through the constitutional amendment process.
