Fresh controversy has emerged over the private aircraft involved in last week’s unusual landing on a road under construction near Asaba, Delta State, as aviation authorities intensify investigations into the incident.
The aircraft reportedly missed its approach to Asaba International Airport on June 10 and landed on a concrete road in the Ogwashi-Uku area. No casualties were recorded, with four crew members said to be on board at the time.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, subsequently ordered regulatory action after the aircraft allegedly departed the location and returned to Lagos without obtaining the required clearance from aviation authorities.
Following the development, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) grounded the aircraft and suspended the operator’s Permit for Non-Commercial Flights (PNCF) pending the outcome of investigations.
The NCAA has also commenced a review of the aircraft’s operational records, maintenance history, airworthiness status and flight documentation to determine whether aviation regulations were violated.
Meanwhile, public debate has intensified following reports linking the aircraft to prominent individuals and organisations. However, no aviation authority or security agency has connected the aircraft, its operators or crew to any criminal activity.
Authorities say investigations remain focused on the circumstances surrounding the missed approach, the road landing and the aircraft’s subsequent departure without authorization.
The incident has renewed discussions about aviation safety, regulatory compliance and oversight of private aircraft operations in Nigeria.
