The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Enugu Region, has intensified efforts to protect critical power infrastructure by launching a community sensitisation campaign in Umuhuali, Ezillo, and Nkalagu communities of Ebonyi State.
The initiative aims to address the growing cases of vandalism, illegal construction within transmission corridors, and excavation activities around transmission tower foundations, which pose serious threats to the nation’s electricity network.
Speaking during the campaign, the General Manager, Transmission, Enugu Region, Dr. Thomas Inugonum, stressed the importance of community partnership in safeguarding high-voltage transmission facilities. He warned against vandalism, illegal structures on TCN’s Right of Way, farming or residing under transmission lines, and the burning of waste beneath power installations.
Dr. Inugonum cited recent incidents in Ebonyi, including the arrest of suspected vandals by local vigilantes and security personnel in Ezza Umuhuali, as well as a fatal electrocution involving an individual attempting to vandalise a transmission tower in Ezillo.
He called on residents to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities, and work closely with security agencies to prevent the destruction and illegal sale of power infrastructure components.
The sensitisation exercise also featured engagements with traditional rulers and community leaders, who pledged their commitment to protecting TCN facilities and preventing encroachment on transmission corridors.
Speaking on behalf of the host communities, the President General of Ezza Umuhuali Town Union, Hon. Solomon Nweke, described attacks on power infrastructure as a threat to national development and public safety, assuring TCN of continued community support.
The campaign ended with residents, community leaders, and stakeholders reaffirming their resolve to collaborate with TCN and security agencies to safeguard electricity infrastructure and ensure reliable power supply across the region.
