The Anambra State Executive Council has approved contracts worth N639.83 million for key developmental projects aimed at improving healthcare delivery and boosting economic activities across the state.
Briefing journalists after the council meeting, Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, disclosed that N237 million was approved for the remodelling of Afouzo Market in Isuofia, Aguata Local Government Area, with the contract awarded to Crystal Dove Construction Company Limited.
The council also approved N402.83 million for the supply of routine antenatal drugs and related services under the state’s free antenatal care and delivery programme. The contract was awarded to Jessy Pharmaceutical Company Limited and Award Global Company Limited.
Mefor said the approvals reflect Governor Charles Soludo’s commitment to strengthening healthcare services, stimulating economic growth and improving the welfare of residents.
The council further reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining the state’s free education, free antenatal care and free delivery policies, while announcing plans to introduce a school adoption programme that will encourage private individuals and organisations to support public schools.
On environmental protection, the government revealed plans to begin strict enforcement of the Catch-pit Law to tackle flooding and erosion, which it described as one of the greatest threats to the state’s infrastructure and environment.
The council also expressed concern over traders displaying goods on roads and obstructing traffic, warning that measures including market relocation and fencing would be implemented to improve safety and orderliness.
In addition, plans are underway for a new law to regulate standards in public and private primary and secondary schools, with a focus on eliminating exploitative levies and promoting best educational practices.
The state government said the decisions are part of ongoing efforts to build a more prosperous, orderly and livable Anambra through investments in infrastructure, healthcare, education and environmental sustainability.
