The Onitsha South Local Government Area of Anambra State has unveiled plans to plant no fewer than 5,000 shade trees as part of an ambitious environmental restoration and urban beautification programme aimed at transforming the commercial city.
Chairman of the council, Chief Emeka Orji, disclosed that the first phase of the initiative will commence with the planting of 2,000 trees, with horticulturists already deployed to strategic locations ahead of the official flag-off scheduled for Monday, June 29, 2026.
According to the council chairman, the project is designed to restore Onitsha’s green landscape, promote environmental sustainability and improve the city’s aesthetic appeal.
Chief Orji recalled that Onitsha was once celebrated as one of the most beautiful cities in the South-East because of its lush greenery but noted that rapid urbanization and market expansion had significantly reduced its tree cover over the years.
He explained that the tree-planting campaign forms part of the local government’s broader urban renewal agenda, which has included the demolition of illegal structures and the clearance of slums to create a cleaner, safer and more organized environment.
The chairman revealed that five species of shade trees, Ural, Caliptus, Dogonyaro, Step and Menailaare will be planted across the local government because of their environmental and ecological benefits.
Chief Orji also announced that the Anambra State Government has taken over the proposed Niger Beach Development Project in Fegge.
He recalled that the council had earlier reclaimed the River Niger waterfront from illegal occupants and street traders to pave the way for the development of a modern waterfront leisure and tourism destination.
According to him, the project will begin with landscaping and grass planting before designated areas are allocated to investors for the construction of eco-friendly shops, restaurants, bars and other recreational facilities.
The council chairman expressed optimism that the Niger Beach project will boost tourism, attract investment, create employment opportunities and further strengthen Onitsha’s position as a leading commercial and tourism destination.
He added that the Anambra State Government is expected to officially flag off the project in the near future.
