Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State made a significant announcement on Wednesday, declaring the complete withdrawal of military presence from the Okuama community in the state.
The governor conveyed this decision during a press conference held at the Government House in Asaba, signaling a pivotal moment for the displaced residents of Okuama to reclaim their homes.
During the briefing, Governor Oborevwori assured the public that the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp, established by his administration, is fully operational.
This facility is aimed at facilitating the smooth resettlement process for the displaced Okuama residents.
The military’s occupation of the community ensued following the tragic loss of 17 Army personnel on March 14, 2024, in the riverine community located in the Ughelli South Local Government Area.
This incident prompted a mass exodus of residents into the creeks and neighboring communities.
The fallen personnel, including the Commanding Officer of 181 Amphibious Battalion, two majors, one captain, and 12 battalion personnel, were laid to rest at the Military Cemetery in Abuja.
Governor Oborevwori’s announcement marks a pivotal moment for Okuama, as it is anticipated that residents will now gradually return home to begin the process of rebuilding their community from the remnants left behind.
