The Abia State government’s teacher recruitment drive has generated unbelievable interest, with over 17,000 applicants competing for just 2,000 positions across Primary, Secondary, and Technical Colleges.
The initiative, approved by Governor Alex Otti, is to strengthen the state’s education system.
According to Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, the online application portal, which opened on Wednesday, has seen an influx of submissions, with more still pouring in.
He assured that the recruitment process will be transparent, as shortlisted candidates will undergo Computer-Based Tests (CBT) followed by oral interviews.
Kanu reiterated the government’s commitment to fairness and merit-based hiring, stressing that the initiative is in line with Governor Otti’s broader education reforms.
These include extending teachers’ retirement age, approving special welfare packages, and introducing tuition-free education.
Meanwhile, addressing concerns over the state’s pension crisis, Kanu dismissed reports that the government misled pensioners during the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP).
