As the widespread coup d’etats continue to engulf some African countries, deposing many dictators, Rwandan President Paul Kagame has carried out a major military purge, retiring over 83 senior military officers.
In what was a drastic decision to forestall any military coup against him, Kagame, who has been for close to two decades, restructured his land forces with new division commanders.
MUK gathered that most of the top military officers affected by this action, including James Kabarebe, Maj Gen Eric Murokore, and Lt Gen Frank Mushyo Akamanzi, were close allies of the Rwandan president.
Kagame’s proactive move came 24 hours after the Gabonese military announced the takeover of power in Gabon and deposed the country’s president, Ali Bongo.
The Rwandan President adds to the number of African leaders who have pragmatically reshuffled their military commanders for fear of coups.
As reported by MUK TV earlier, Cameroonian president Paul Biya, though 90 years old, also reshuffled his senior military officers to deter any military insurrection against his over four decades of reign in power.
