The Enugu State Government has heightened surveillance and public health measures to prevent the possible outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) following reported cases in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Speaking after a meeting of the State Public Health Emergency Operations Centre, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. George Ugwu, said the government has strengthened monitoring at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport and other points of entry into the state.

According to him, additional health surveillance officers have been deployed to support existing Port Health Quarantine Service personnel in screening travelers and enforcing Ebola prevention protocols.

Dr. Ugwu also disclosed that the state has intensified public awareness campaigns through community leaders, religious organisations, traditional rulers, and social media platforms to educate residents on Ebola symptoms, prevention, and early reporting procedures.

He urged residents to maintain proper personal and environmental hygiene and promptly report any suspected symptoms, particularly among individuals returning from affected countries.

The commissioner assured that the state government remains vigilant and committed to safeguarding public health through continuous collaboration with relevant health agencies and stakeholders.
