The Anambra State House of Assembly has called on Governor Chukwuma Soludo to direct the Ministry of Transport to introduce a security identification number for all commercial transport operators in the state.
The proposed identification system will cover commercial motorcycle (okada) riders, tricycle (keke) operators, shuttle buses and other public transport services to strengthen security and improve accountability.
The resolution followed a motion sponsored by the member representing Nnewi North Constituency, Hon. Augustine Ikeh, and supported by 22 lawmakers. According to the House, the absence of a reliable identification system has made it difficult for security agencies to trace transport operators involved in crimes such as robbery, kidnapping and theft.
Lawmakers said creating a central database with unique identification numbers would enhance monitoring, aid criminal investigations and improve public safety.
Speaker of the House, Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, said the initiative would make it easier for security agencies to identify offenders and effectively combat crime across the state.
