FirstBank has partnered with the Imo State Government to support the One Kindred One Business Initiative (ÓKÓBÌ), a flagship programme designed to promote entrepreneurship, expand financial inclusion and create sustainable jobs across the state.
The initiative, conceived by Governor Hope Uzodimma, is built on the African values of communal ownership and collective responsibility, encouraging families and community groups to establish and manage registered businesses together.
Since its launch in 2023, the ÓKÓBÌ programme has registered more than 600 businesses with over 20,000 members and is targeting the creation or support of 100,000 jobs within three years.
Speaking on the partnership, the Chief Executive Officer of FirstBank Group, Mr. Olusegun Alebiosu, said the bank is committed to supporting initiatives that empower communities through entrepreneurship and financial inclusion.
According to him, the ÓKÓBÌ model transforms existing social networks into viable business enterprises, helping communities build sustainable wealth while expanding access to finance for small and medium-scale businesses.
He noted that FirstBank’s support aligns with its broader commitment to promoting financial inclusion, supporting SMEs and driving long-term socio-economic development across Nigeria.
Also speaking, the Chief Economic Adviser to the Imo State Government, Professor Kenneth Amaeshi, commended FirstBank for supporting the initiative, describing ÓKÓBÌ as an innovative model with the potential to tackle unemployment and reduce the informal nature of businesses across Nigeria.
Professor Amaeshi called on other corporate organisations and development partners to embrace the initiative, stressing that it empowers individuals to become business owners, promotes wealth creation and strengthens community-based enterprises.
He also applauded Governor Hope Uzodimma for introducing the programme and sustaining the political will needed for its successful implementation.
Recognised by the Federal Government as one of eight National Human Capital Development Accelerator Projects, the ÓKÓBÌ initiative is increasingly attracting the attention of development partners and private investors seeking credible, community-driven platforms for economic empowerment.
FirstBank said its support for the initiative is part of its sustainability agenda, with a focus on promoting diversity, financial inclusion and access to funding for underserved groups, particularly women and young entrepreneurs.
