Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, has aroused fresh political debate ahead of 2027, declaring that no northerner should contest the presidency in the next general election.

Speaking on Sunrise Daily on Channels Television on Tuesday, the governor maintained that while every Nigerian has the constitutional right to aspire to the highest office, fairness and national stability demand that power remains in the South.

“It is still the turn of the south. A northerner has no business at the moment to vie for the office of the president,” he said.

Fintiri, who dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in February, called on Nigerians to rally behind President Bola Tinubu and allow him to complete an eight-year tenure.

“After all, he has done so much. He initiated good policies that are working, showing us light at the end of the tunnel,” he said.

The governor also addressed speculations about his relationship with former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, insisting there is no personal fallout, only political divergence.

“Nothing has gone bad but everybody has taken their political ways. I am today in APC, they are in another party,” he said.

Atiku, who resigned from the PDP in July 2025, later joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in November 2025 and has indicated interest in contesting the party’s presidential ticket in 2027.
